PhD in Finance
The Ph.D. program in Finance from the University CEU Cardenal Herrera has been verified by the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA). It comprises two periods: training and research, as established by the Article 18 of RD 1393/2007. The formative period, as indicated in Resolution of 29th December 2008 from the General Directorate for Universities (second paragraph), corresponds entirely to the official Master’s degree in Finance verified by ANECA.
Our PhD program and the M. Fin. it is associated with share the same professional interest. Hence, when students complete their formative period, they will be highly qualified professionals able to meet the labor market demand for highly specialized professionals in the financial area. An area which requires or will require a professional certification in the near future.
On the other hand, the research period has an academic and scientific interest, since financial markets and the products traded in them require increasingly sophisticated responses and even innovations that require highly technical empirical research. It is then vital to carry out a permanent adaptation of knowledge, as well as a dissemination of scientific advances that allow establishing a connection between the University and the reality of the financial world. To cover this period successfully the academic team has a renowned research experience.
OBJECTIVES
The overall goal of the PhD in Finance is to train professionals, help them to become able to perform high quality research and teaching, management tasks, counseling and assessment in the financial area of productive organizations, assuming the exercise of their profession with the responsibility and concern of someone who is aware of the commitment that involves such a momentous task for society’s and their own good.
According to the specific objectives:
- Doctorate students will perform their activity using quantitative techniques and advanced computing intensively. This will enable them to take complex decisions in a knowledgeable an optimal manner.
- Doctorate students will have a thorough knowledge of the functioning of the financial system, the alternatives of resource allocation, asset valuation and risk management and their articulation in the overall context of the economy. In particular, candidates must be able to identify and anticipate relevant economic and financial difficulties in any particular situation, discuss the alternatives that facilitate their resolution, select the most appropriate ones according to the objectives and evaluate the results.
- Candidates will develop the necessary skills to conduct research work and to obtain a doctoral degree exploiting the research potential of the large group of professors involved in the training program.
- The ultimate goal for a doctorate student in this program is to have the content of their doctoral thesis published in relevant scientific journals (JCR, Scimago, etc.).
ADMISSION
There are two possible admission procedures:

Ordinary procedure: for those wishing to enroll in the formative period of Ph.D. in Finance. Please find the requirements listed on the
Master in Finance’s website.

Extraordinary procedure: for those wishing to apply for inclusion in the research period directly. The following will be valued:
- Holding an official Master of Finance degree.
- Holding a formal Master’s Degree in which at least 60 credits relate to the financial matters dealt with in the Formative Period of the program.
- Holding a Diploma of Advanced Studies (RD 1393/2007, fourth additional provision).
- Having completed at least 60 credits of an official program of a Master related to Finance
- Holding a formal Graduate Degree in Finance, Accounting or Business Management of at least 300 credits. Most of which must relate to subjects dealt with in the Formative Period.
